Graphic design
and identity

I started here, when delivery still meant a printed sheet, and I never left. Brand identity and systems, editorial, campaign, banners and infographics — what gets printed and what gets sent — made by the same head that designs the screens, which is exactly what stops a brand falling apart when it reaches the web.

(01) — What is included

What a graphics engagement contains

  • Brand identity Logo, sub-brand system, colour, type, grid and the short manual explaining how it all gets used. Tested in positive, negative, horizontal, vertical and at 32 pixels, which is where brands break.
  • Editorial design Books, reports, dossiers, annual reviews and theses. Grid, hierarchy and footnotes that do not fight the text. I have typeset two-volume works.
  • Campaign graphics Posters, social pieces, launch graphics and the adaptations to the fifteen formats that always turn up on the last day.
  • Advertising banners Complete sets for display and affiliate networks, in every standard size, with static and animated versions.
  • Infographics Data you can read at a glance. Illustration, composition and the discipline of not decorating what needs explaining.
  • Email marketing Design and build of responsive newsletters that look right in Outlook too, which is the hard part. I write the HTML myself.

(03) — Why it matters who does it

A brand that does not survive the screen is not finished

The place identities break is not the billboard or the report cover: it is the favicon, the button on a dark background, the logo inside a 56-pixel-tall header, and that same logo in an email signature Outlook is going to rescale without asking.

Designing the brand while knowing how the screen gets built afterwards avoids nearly all of that: minimum sizes get tested where they will actually be used, colour is chosen with the contrast standard in hand, and the system is handed over already translated into tokens, ready for the code.

It is the same reason product design and front-end live in this same house.
